A year after West Hollywood, California became one of the first cities in America to ban the sale and use of glue traps for rodent protection – another California city has joined the ban. Glue trap sales and their use are now also banned in Ojai, California, because of the harmful effects they have.
The traps, commonly used throughout the country, were banned because they are found to hurt animals. Both the Ojai and West Hollywood city councils included language about the issues relating to animals in their ordinances.
Glue traps are sticky trays that are put out – typically in places to attempt to fight pest infestations, specifically roaches, rats, and mice. But squirrels, small dogs, and other small animals are being caught in them, hence the bans. Ojai’s ban took place in March 2024, West Hollywood was in 2023.
In addition, the glue traps can keep a mouse stuck to it for hours or days and because it can be considered inhumane as a practice, the cities state in their ordinances.
Bait traps are more commonly used for rodents, where rats or mice enter the trap and eat poisonous baits. Other opportunities for rodent protection is simply rodent prevention.
